The goal of the Green School Initiative is to recognize schools in Cobb County that have an active environmental education and outdoor learning program and to encourage teachers to facilitate ecological enrichment and appreciation for the natural world with their students. Green Schools are recognized annually as either GREEN, SILVER, GOLD, or PLATINUM level for the participating year.
Become A Green School:
- School designates a lead teacher to coordinate Green School Initiative for their school.
- Lead Teacher fills out a Green School application.
- Additional details sent to lead teacher by Cobb Water staff.
- Lead teacher ensures Green School requirements are met.
- Lead teacher ensures classroom activities are recorded by the last Friday in March of the current school year.
- Award level designations will be announced and signs delivered before the end of the school year.
Become a Green Classroom:
- Facilitate 5 activities.
- 1 activity from the Blue Earth Activity list
- 1 activity from the Watershed Stewardship Service Project list
- 3 additional activities from either the Blue Earth Activities list -OR- the Watershed Stewardship Service Projects list
- Complete lesson documentation before the deadline.
Award Level Designations:
Green School award level is determined by the percentage of classrooms in the school who qualify as Green Classrooms.
- Platinum: 50% of classrooms
- Gold: 40% of classrooms
- Silver: 30% of classrooms
- Green: 20% of classrooms

Schools receiving the GOLD award, at least 40% of classrooms earning Green status:
Baker Elementary; Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA); Keheley Elementary; Shallowford Falls Elementary.
Schools receiving the SILVER award, at least 30% of classrooms earning Green status:
Addison Elementary; Austell Elementary; Due West Elementary; Murdock Elementary; Simpson Middle.
Schools receiving the GREEN award, at least 20% of classrooms earning Green status:

In total, 24 schools participated in the initiative and achieved Green School status for the 2024-25 school year. These designations represent the work of 417 teachers who taught a total of 2,085 lessons and reported 2,856 hours of environmental education for 21,840 students.
