In this era of fast fashion and inexpensive consumer goods, textile waste is putting increasing strain on landfills, our waterways, and the environment as a whole. Textiles have become one of the top categories of household waste, with 92 million tons of textiles being sent to landfills each year. Much of this waste is polyester-based, which contributes to the growing issue of microplastics in our soil and waterways.

The good news is that there are some ways to keep textiles out of landfills. Firstly, if clothing, shoes, bedding, or other textiles are in good condition, they could potentially be donated and given a second life. You can donate such items to thrift stores or offer them to friends or neighbors online. If an item is damaged, check with a local tailor/seamstress or cobbler to see if the item can be repaired.

Another option is to bring clean, dry items in tied plastic bags to our Recycling Drop-Off Area at 1775 County Services Parkway in Marietta and deposit in one of the Green Zone Recycling bins. Green Zone Recycling accepts clean, dry clothing, shoes, and household textiles in tied plastic bags. Make sure the items are free from oil and chemicals, and do not include any fabric bolts or scraps, batting, or pillows. Damaged items are accepted. Green Zone prepares items for resale and recycles items that can't be resold.

Another option for recycling shoes is EcoSneakers. EcoSneakers resells shoes in good condition and recycles damaged shoes, transforming them into toys, playground mulch, and more. This Atlanta-based business partners with stores to facilitate drop-off. Visit their site for locations.
