BOC proclaims May 27, 2025, Charlie Duncan Day

Charlie Duncan Day

During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners celebrated a special birthday for a longtime county resident. Charlie Duncan turned 106 years old the same date as the meeting. The commissioners honored his longevity with a standing ovation and a proclamation naming the day after him.

Duncan, a World War II veteran, spent most of his life in and around Cobb County. He attended the Seventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School, now known as McEachern High School. Duncan was married to his first wife, Geneva, for 39 years, with whom he had two children. After her passing, he married Mary, and they shared 44 years together until her passing. His family now includes 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

During the war, Duncan was a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and became a master craftsman at Randall Brothers Millworks in Atlanta, retiring from the business after 37 years. He also owned a grocery store and built his own home.

Duncan credited his long life to staying active and eating healthy. He enjoyed square dancing for 37 years, which kept him mentally and physically agile and stayed fit with water aerobics classes at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. In 2023, he was the grand marshal of the Marietta “Let Freedom Ring” parade.

The Board of Commissioners presented a donation to Cobb County Senior Services' Meals on Wheels program as part of the third annual Battle of the Paddles fundraiser. Pickleball has grown into a popular sport, and Commissioner Gambrill, in partnership with Cobb PARKS and Senior Services, decided to organize a challenge to raise funds for a worthy cause.

Through the Meals on Wheels program, Cobb County delivers nutritionally balanced meals to qualifying older adults. Each week, trained volunteers deliver five-pack meals to clients' doors, with menus planned by a registered dietitian to meet one-third of an adult's daily nutritional needs. The Battle of the Paddles fundraiser was created to support this vital program, helping ensure seniors receive healthy meals.
